Wheatland is the county seat of Platte County, located in the southeast corner of Wyoming. Its population is nearly 3,600 as of the 2020 Census. Prior to the late part of the 19th century, Wheatland was basically a desert. But in 1883, the Wyoming Development Company was established. An irrigation system and railway station soon followed. To this day, the Wheatland Irrigation District remains the largest privately owned irrigation system in the United States. It is home of the historic Wheatland station, and hosts the annual Platte County Fair & Rodeo each August.
